Article 14: AI Unified Story Editing Experience
The Digital Team is excited to announce the beta experience of a new unified experience in StoryLine, designed to create a more seamless, efficient, and consistent workflow for producers.
As we continue expanding AI capabilities in StoryLine, we are also working toward unifying the overall content creation experience across the platform. This release introduces foundational UI enhancements alongside new AI-assisted workflows that help streamline story production while maintaining full producer control throughout the editorial process.
The new experience enables producers to leverage AI-generated content during story creation, including assistance with:
- Headlines
- Story Summaries
- Push Notification Titles
- Push Notification Descriptions
- Story Body Copy
Producers can choose to use the automated AI workflow to generate multiple content elements at once, or they can selectively engage AI for individual fields based on their specific needs. This flexible approach allows producers to incorporate AI assistance where it adds value while maintaining editorial oversight and decision-making.
What's New
- This beta release introduces a more unified and streamlined editor experience in StoryLine, including updates to content organization, publishing workflows, AI-assisted content creation, and push notification management to create a more intuitive producer experience.
- As part of this update, Push Notification Title and Description fields are now directly editable within the editor experience. Previously, automated push notifications relied on predefined notification content. Producers can now review, modify, and customize push notification messaging before publishing a story, ensuring notifications are tailored to the specific editorial needs of each story.
- Additionally, AI assistance is now integrated directly into the content creation workflow, enabling producers to generate or refine content within supported fields without leaving the editor experience.
- For more details on Push Notifications, please refer to the Automated Push Notification: FAQ help documentation.
New Story Editor UI
What's Changed:
AI Content Tools
A new AI Content Tools control has been added to the bottom-right corner of the editor. This serves as the central entry point for AI-assisted content creation within StoryLine.
Producers can use AI Content Tools to generate content for:
- Headlines
- Story Summaries
- Push Notification Titles
- Push Notification Descriptions
- Story Body Copy
The AI Content Tools experience provides flexibility for different workflows. Producers can choose to generate multiple content elements through an automated workflow or engage AI on individual fields as needed. All AI-generated content remains fully editable, allowing producers to review, refine, and publish content according to their editorial judgment.
Summary Field Relocation
The Summary field has moved from the right rail into a more prominent, front-and-center position within the editor experience, making it easier to review and edit during story creation.
Push Notification Management
A new Push Notification section is now available within the editor, allowing producers to review and modify Push Notification Title and Push Notification Description content during the initial publishing workflow.
Push Notification Title and Push Notification Description fields are now surfaced alongside the Summary field, improving visibility and making notification content easier to manage as part of the overall story creation process.
Publishing Metadata Organization
The URL and Canonical URL fields have been relocated to the right rail to better organize publishing-related metadata and create a cleaner primary editing experience.
How Automated AI Generation Works
Criteria for Automatic AI Generation
The Automated AI workflow will generate content only when the following conditions are met:
- The story body (copy text) is populated first and meets the required minimum content thresholds.
- The target field is currently empty.
- The target field has not been manually edited by a producer.
- The story body contains at least 400 characters of content.
- The story body contains at least two complete sentences.
- The story body consists primarily of narrative content and is not predominantly bullet points or lists.
- The story body contains a limited number of placeholders, notes, or script markers (for example:
TK,TODO,VO:,SOT:,OTF, or[[placeholder]]). - The producer has paused typing for at least three seconds, indicating that content entry is complete.
- The story has not yet been saved, either through a manual save action or an automatic save event.
How AI Handles Existing Content
If any AI-enabled field (such as Headline, Summary, Push Notification Title, Push Notification Description, or Story Body Copy) has already been manually populated by a producer, the Automated AI workflow will not overwrite that content—even if all other criteria are met for the story body.
Once a field has been edited or confirmed by a producer, it will no longer be eligible for automated AI generation to prevent overwriting existing content. However, the field remains fully editable and can still be used for manual AI generation at any time.
How Manual AI Generation Works
Manual AI generation allows producers to generate AI-assisted content on demand for individual fields or across multiple fields within the Story Editor. This approach provides full control over when AI is used, what content is generated, and how broadly it is applied across a story.
All AI-generated content is inserted directly into the selected field(s) and remains fully editable. Producers can refine, replace, or regenerate results at any time based on editorial needs.
Manual AI generation does not impact fields that are not selected, and no content is overwritten without direct producer action. This ensures full editorial control throughout the workflow while still enabling flexible AI assistance where needed.
Global AI Content Tools (Bottom-Right Control):
The AI Content Tools panel becomes available after selecting an AI writing style. Once a style is selected, producers can generate AI content across multiple fields at once or selectively choose which fields to include in the generation process. This provides a centralized workflow for generating headlines, summaries, push notification content, and story body copy while maintaining control over which fields are updated.
Field-level AI:
Each AI-enabled field supports contextual AI controls that appear when a producer focuses on or selects text within that field. The AI Content Tools interface dynamically updates to show only the actions relevant to that specific field type and content selection.
Undo and Redo:
When AI tools are used to generate content, Undo and Redo controls become available within the affected field. These controls allow producers to cycle through AI-generated results and do not impact manual edits or content in other fields.
Important Notes
- AI-generated content is intended to assist producers and should be reviewed prior to publishing.
- Results may vary based on the amount and quality of information available in the story.
- All AI-generated content can be edited manually at any time.
- Undo and Redo controls are available for AI-generated content within each supported field.
